GRP Enclosures for Distribution Boards

A distribution board living outdoors needs more than an IP rating on the board itself — it needs a proper housing that keeps weather, casual interference and UV off the equipment for the life of the installation. GRP enclosures are the standard answer on UK roadsides for exactly this job, and we stock a full spread of sizes.

Matching the enclosure to the board

The right cabinet comes down to the size of the board, working access, and what else shares the housing:

  • Small DBs and single-supply boards — a single door roadside enclosure is usually right. Compact footprint, padlockable, and approved patterns used by the DNOs.
  • Larger boards, or board plus metering — a double door roadside cabinet gives clear, full-width access, so an electrician can work on the board rather than around the doorframe.
  • Boards in compounds and plant areas — our floor standing enclosures cover the middle ground in many widths and depths.
  • Switchrooms and multi-panel installations — a walk-in GRP kiosk houses the boards and the people working on them.

Why GRP for DB housings?

GRP is non-conductive, so the housing itself never becomes part of an electrical fault path. It doesn't rust around gland plates or door hinges the way steel eventually does, the colour is pigmented right through the gelcoat rather than painted on, and there's no earthing complication or maintenance schedule for the enclosure itself. The full comparison is on our GRP vs steel page.

Fitting out

Most cabinets in the range take a marine ply or composite backboard for mounting the DB, with gland plates top or bottom for cable entry. Tell us the board dimensions and cable route in your enquiry and we'll confirm the internal clearances before you order — it's the one measurement people most often get caught out by.

Browse the full range from our GRP electrical enclosures hub, or go straight to the enquiry form with your board size.

Send us your distribution board dimensions — we'll size the enclosure.
